Preserving New Braunfels’ Historic Legacy
The Black Whale Pub is deeply rooted in the rich heritage of New Braunfels. Originating back in the 1800s, a bar known as Zum Schwarzen Wallfisch was constructed during the town’s early settlement. Local tales whispered of nights when the voices of jail inmates mingled with the songs of the saloon’s patrons, creating an atmosphere alive with camaraderie.
Later in that same century, the saloon underwent a relocation, and in its place the Herald emerged as the pioneering newspaper of New Braunfels. As the Herald continues to be published and distributed across the town, a profound connection to the past is preserved within its walls.
In 2007, the Black Whale Pub opened its doors at the very location where Zum Schwarzen Wallfisch once stood, paying homage to its predecessor’s name, which translates to “the black whale” in English. The low ceiling above our booth created excellent acoustics, and the music was kept at a comfortable volume.
As someone who works with hearing loss patients, I was thrilled to see that my husband, who has significant hearing loss, was able to enjoy a relaxed and easy conversation with me.
Finding a place where we can comfortably converse can be a challenge, but the Black Whale Pub exceeded our expectations.
This was exemplified by our exceptional waitress, Kirsten, who was an absolute gem—friendly and attentive. She truly enhanced our dining experience, leaving a lasting impression.
