Can Hearing Aids Help You Live Longer?

by | Mar 6, 2024 | Hearing Aids

There are quite a few studies out in the world linking untreated hearing loss to several mental and physical ailments—cognitive decline, balance disorders, dementia, and even a higher mortality rate.

It’s scary to think about, but the key word here is “untreated.” The sooner you get your ears looked at, the sooner you can sidestep those terrifying statistics!

Allow me to offer a study that isn’t quite as frightening: hearing aids, when worn consistently and correctly, could actually help you live longer.

This study, taken on by Dr. Janet Choi from the University of Southern California, took almost ten thousand participants with hearing loss challenges and looked at how regular hearing aid usage affected their lifestyles and health, and the results were astounding.

Choi found that between the two groups—one group who wore hearing aids regularly and one who didn’t wear them at all—the group that used hearing aids had a 24 percent lower risk of mortality. Almost a quarter less!

Of course, the study comes with a few caveats. For one, Choi emphasizes that hearing aids are not the only means to living a longer life—rather, people with hearing loss challenges who make a conscious effort to wear their hearing aids regularly are the ones who reap the benefits.

It makes sense that people shy away from wearing, or even getting, hearing aids. For years, there have been negative stigmas attached to them, and when people think of hearing aids, the picture isn’t always a good one.

Thankfully, hearing aid technology has advanced over the years. Today’s hearing aids are discreet and powerful, and some are even virtually invisible!

Hearing the world around you will keep you safe, especially while commuting to and from work, working in construction, or even cooking at home. By wearing hearing aids consistently, your hearing can help you stay aware of cars honking, busy work sites, and fire alarms beeping—noises that could cost you your life if you couldn’t hear them.
